Help Someone Help You

By Douglas Goldstein, CFPâ

I recently met with a client who became terminally ill shortly after she opened an account and couldn’t take care of her own affairs.  Though she had close friends who sincerely wanted to help, and were capable of doing so, no one could take action on her behalf.  Neither her bank nor her investment house could speak with her friends because they had to respect client confidentiality, and the friends had no legal right to speak for her.  At certain times, the friends had to put up their own money to help.  If someone had a durable power-of-attorney, her friends could have helped to a greater degree. They would have had the ability to make responsible decisions on her behalf and they could have used her own money to help her more generously through her sickness.

Power-of-attorney

A general power-of-attorney is a legal document that allows you to grant another person the right to act on your behalf.  If it is “durable,” the agent can act for you even if you are sick.  If it is “non-durable,” then your incapacity will void the powers of the agent.

The hardest part about creating a power-of-attorney is deciding who will have the responsibility and the decision-making over your assets and person. Choose someone who will have your best interests in mind, who understands your feelings, goals and wishes, and who has experience dealing with money.  Commonly, people choose from amongst their spouse, sibling, parent, child, close friend, or lawyer.

When is a good time to prepare the document?

Yesterday would have been the best time to execute a power-of-attorney.  But if you didn’t get a chance then, do it today.  By definition, we never know when tragedy will strike and we’ll be unable to care for ourselves.  Consult with your lawyer to determine the best way to write your durable power-of-attorney, and to see if there are other important documents that would apply to your situation in the event of your incapacity.  A little preparation today could save a tremendous amount of trouble later.

A Good Job with a Pension

By Douglas Goldstein, CFPâ

My grandmother used to tell me that when she was dating my grandfather, she was particularly impressed with him because, “Grandpa had a government job with a pension.”  While I’m absolutely sure that she didn’t marry him for his pension, this got me thinking.  How much is a pension really worth?

Calculating whether your pension will adequately meet your retirement needs is very difficult. Often, the amount of monthly income that you will receive is based on a complex formula taking into account the number of years you’ve worked, your average wages, your retirement age and other factors.

Will your future pension suffice once you take inflation and unexpected expenditures into account? Whether you are relying on a corporate pension or on a government pension, be aware that you may or may not have sufficient financial backing until the end of your days. It’s up to you now to review your employment retirement benefits, evaluate your personal financial holdings, and do some calculations on your own. In considering the question of whether we can really count on someone else to take care of all our monetary worries, the answer, unfortunately, is no.

Take responsibility for your own future

What can you do?  Create a financial plan, begin keeping a budget; save systematically, invest for growth and diversify.  Keep in mind that when you review your pension benefits, the figures might or might not portray what you will actually receive in your retirement years. Furthermore, a reasonable sounding sum quoted in today’s shekels might be a paltry amount when you retire, after being adjusted for inflation.

Although pension plans are an important component of your total retirement program, they are only one facet of your nest egg.  Don’t think that the new Israeli law requiring employees to give pensions to workers is the cure-all for your retirement woes.  Acquiring personal savings and investments that safeguard the real value of your money is a crucial aspect of your overall picture.  Remember, a comfortable retirement does not come easily.  To prepare for yours, you must plan carefully and set up a strategy that will work for you.
